From Amazon to DoorDash
Journey, learnings, and things I look forward to…
I committed to my fiancé (then girlfriend) to move to the East Coast in mid-2023 while most of the companies were laying off software developers. This decision resulted in an uphill battle of job applications, interviews, and rejections. Until one day, when things started to change. I received an email from DoorDash saying I have cleared the interviews. A few weeks later, I received an email from Meta that I had also cleared interviews with them.
After a lot of consideration, I finally joined DoorDash in its mission to empower local economies.
Going through the phases of applications, interviews, and rejections, I learned a lot about coding, system design, and communication. You only get 45 mins to prove that you know stuff. It was a two-sided challenge of gaining technical knowledge and proving it in a brief 45-minute call. It took me a few iterations to understand what I needed to clear these interviews, and once I understood that it became easy to get two competing job offers from DoorDash and Meta.
I will use this platform to share how exactly you can win at this two-sided challenge as well.
What I look forward to
Amazon was my first job out of University. Although I studied computer science at University, working as a software engineer was a challenging experience because of many things that I didn’t learn at University. Now that I have uncovered the software engineering landscape, I can combine computer science and software engineering knowledge to unlock the next level of skills and executions.
The next phase is going deep in my technical skills, while also growing my leadership abilities. I think both are equally important to grow as a software developer
